President of ThriveFinder LLC | Helping organizations build leaders who create clarity, strengthen accountability, and bring out the best in their teams
Introduction
Leadership is often tested in the moments when a team loses its way: priorities compete, expectations become uncertain, and capable people struggle to see how their work fits into the bigger picture.
For Dana Dorcas, President of ThriveFinder LLC, those moments have been a defining part of a career dedicated to helping teams move from uncertainty to performance by building stronger leadership practices.
During 29 years with U.S. Cellular, Dorcas held roles including general manager, director, and senior director. He led eight underperforming markets through turnarounds, helping teams move from “worst to first.”
The experience reinforced a conviction that has shaped his work ever since: strong results are not sustained by one person’s effort alone. They come from leaders who set a clear direction, coach consistently, establish accountability, and create the conditions for others to succeed.
That conviction now informs the EMERGE Leadership System, a practical framework designed to help leaders turn good intentions into everyday habits.
Through ThriveFinder, Dorcas brings decades of leadership experience into organizations seeking to develop managers, strengthen teams, and improve how work gets done.
From Experience to a Repeatable Practice
After retiring from U.S. Cellular in 2019, Dorcas continued working with leaders and organizations in new ways.
He authored business and leadership books, coached senior leaders, and partnered with small and midsized businesses on challenges specific to their goals and circumstances.
Rather than offering a fixed solution for every client, he begins by understanding the organization’s context.
A business questionnaire helps surface priorities and challenges ahead of an in-person discovery session. Dorcas then selects relevant activities from 15 purpose-built wall boards to guide the discussion.
The company receives a summary of findings and recommendations, followed by a proposal and statement of work tailored to the agreed objectives.
For Dorcas, the process does not end with a report or a presentation. When an organization engages ThriveFinder, the work moves into implementation, with support focused on carrying out the agreed plan and achieving its intended results.
He says each statement of work undertaken since his retirement has been completed successfully, with the intended results attained.
This approach reflects a lesson he learned over decades in sales and leadership: performance cannot depend on a single leader holding everything together. Sustainable progress requires clarity, capability, ownership, and sound habits across the team.
The EMERGE Leadership System
The EMERGE Leadership System organizes those habits into six connected disciplines: Envision, Mobilize, Enable, Reinforce, Grow, and Evaluate.
Together, they offer leaders a practical way to clarify the destination, align people around shared priorities, remove barriers, reinforce standards, develop capability, and adjust their approach based on evidence.
The framework is designed to be practiced, not simply understood.
Participants connect the disciplines to leadership situations they face in their own workplaces, work through realistic challenges, receive feedback, and develop a plan for applying what they have learned with their teams.
The emphasis is on what happens after the training room: the next conversation with an employee, the next decision under pressure, or the next moment when expectations need to be made clear.
The aim is to help leaders respond with greater intention and consistency when those moments arise.
A Record Built on Results and People
For Dorcas, one of the most meaningful measures of leadership is helping a team deliver stronger business results while developing the people responsible for them.
During his career, his teams consistently delivered year-over-year results above 10%, and his work was featured in two Telephone and Data Systems (TDS) annual reports.
He was also the first recipient of the Dynamic Coach Award. In each of the award’s first two years, only two leaders were selected from a pool of approximately 1,000, and Dorcas received the recognition both times.
The award acknowledged leaders who combined strong business performance with a Culture Survey score of at least 90. Across the years the survey was administered, Dorcas never scored below 90 and reached 95 or higher in several years.
Four Dynamic Coach awards and two Dynamic Leadership awards recognized this blend of results and people leadership.
The record is significant to him not simply as recognition, but as evidence of what can happen when performance and the employee experience are treated as connected responsibilities.
And when results fell short, those moments also became part of the learning: face the facts, understand what needs to change, and make a deliberate course correction.
Those are the kinds of real-world tests that inform EMERGE.
The system is intended to help leaders navigate the everyday work of leading: setting priorities, having difficult conversations, responding to pressure, strengthening accountability, and helping people develop.
Leadership Development That Continues Beyond the Classroom
Many managers step into leadership because they have excelled in their individual roles.
Yet managing others requires a different set of skills, and too often new leaders are expected to develop those skills while already carrying the demands of the job.
The result can be uneven expectations, delayed feedback, accountability that feels personal, and talent that remains underdeveloped.
ThriveFinder’s EMERGE program is structured as a year-long leadership development experience rather than a one-time event.
It includes 10 monthly virtual mastermind sessions, each lasting three hours: one hour devoted to feedback and two hours focused on an applied lesson.
The monthly rhythm gives participants an opportunity to try a leadership practice in the workplace, reflect on what happened, learn from peers, and return to the next session with concrete experience.
Over time, that cycle can help turn new ideas into more consistent ways of communicating, coaching, and taking responsibility.
The goal is not to keep leaders busy with training. It is to support meaningful changes in how they lead and to connect those changes to the work and performance of their teams.
Measuring Growth Through Everyday Leadership
Business results remain essential. Organizations need reliable execution, accountability, and growth.
But Dorcas sees a broader measure of success in the leadership practices that help make those results sustainable: clearer priorities, better conversations, stronger ownership, and more people prepared to develop others.
That perspective is reflected in the program’s assessment process.
Participants complete an assessment before and after the class. It measures 22 leadership competencies and 66 behaviors, and also includes eight applied leadership scenarios and written comments.
Comparing the two assessment points gives participants a structured view of where their leadership practice may have shifted and where continued attention is needed.
The assessment is developmental, not a pass-or-fail grade. Its purpose is to support reflection and growth, helping leaders identify actions they can continue to practice and refine.
A newly released EMERGE book, available on Amazon, serves as an ongoing reference for participants.
Leaders can return to the framework when preparing for a conversation, making a decision, reinforcing a standard, or coaching an employee.
Together, the training, assessment, and book are intended to keep the learning accessible well beyond the initial sessions.
The Values Behind the System
Service, integrity, personal responsibility, growth, and respect for people form the foundation of ThriveFinder’s approach.
These values call for both high standards and practical support: leaders should be honest about performance while also creating an environment where people can learn, contribute, and improve.
For Dorcas, leadership is revealed through ordinary decisions as much as major milestones.
It is visible in whether commitments are kept, how difficult news is received, whether people are treated fairly, and whether standards are applied consistently.
Trust is built or weakened through these repeated interactions.
That is why the EMERGE system gives attention not only to what leaders decide, but also to how they lead people through the work.
A leader’s influence is shaped by the clarity they provide, the responsibility they model, and the respect they show when the pressure is on.
A Career Defined by Contribution
Dorcas’s advice to emerging and experienced leaders alike is to build a career around contribution.
Learn the work, take responsibility for results, and remember the people whose effort makes those results possible.
Seek feedback and act on it.
Pay attention to the small moments: the expectations you set, the questions you ask, the promises you keep, and the way you respond when someone brings you a problem.
These habits may seem modest in isolation, but they shape the trust and consistency on which effective teams depend.
For leaders who want to explore the EMERGE framework, the book offers an introduction to the system.
For organizations ready to put it into practice, ThriveFinder works with leadership teams to create an applied training experience and reinforce the learning over time.
Dorcas’s central message is that leadership is not a title or a one-off performance.
It is a set of practices that can be learned, strengthened, and shared.
When leaders create clarity, build capability, and take responsibility for developing others, they do more than improve their own performance they help create teams that are better equipped to meet the next challenge.
