The Spark: Where Experience Became Perspective
Davlynne Lidbetter did not set out to build a career in luxury brand strategy. Instead, she built one step by step, across nearly three decades in media, marketing, publishing, partnerships, and entrepreneurship.
Her professional journey began in South African media, where she worked across influential brands including Heat, FHM, and ZOO. Beginning on the commercial side gave her an early and practical understanding of how brands truly operate. She learned to understand audiences, negotiate partnerships, develop commercial relationships, and, perhaps most importantly, recognise the difference between what a brand says about itself and what its audience actually believes.
That perspective became particularly valuable when her career took her to Forbes and the opportunity to help establish Forbes Africa. Taking a globally recognised brand into a new market required considerably more than simply putting an established name on a publication. It required credibility, audience development, commercial strategy, and a clear understanding of the market.
Within twelve months, Forbes Africa had become the No. 1 B2B publication in Africa, a result that would become one of the defining achievements of Davlynne’s career.
The experience also shaped the philosophy she continues to bring to businesses today.
“I am interested in what sits behind the marketing: the proposition, the audience, the positioning and ultimately whether the business can deliver on the promise its brand is making.”
For Davlynne, effective branding has never been about appearances alone. It is about understanding the business underneath the brand and ensuring that the two are aligned.
The Current Chapter: Strategy, Entrepreneurship and New Possibilities
Today, Davlynne is in one of the most entrepreneurial chapters of her career, drawing on almost 30 years of experience across media, marketing, publishing, partnerships, and brand development.
As a Fractional CMO and luxury brand strategist, she works across a diverse portfolio that includes Lords of the Manor in the Cotswolds, Blacks and a cinematic content creation business in London, and Halyon in Ireland.
Although these businesses operate across different sectors, Davlynne sees a common strategic challenge running through them: identifying what makes a proposition valuable and then ensuring that the brand, marketing, and commercial strategy communicate that value effectively.
Alongside her consultancy work, she is co-founder of Beau Monde Traveller, a luxury travel publication operating across the UK and South Africa.
Her latest venture, PadelLux, brings together two areas she finds particularly compelling: lifestyle and luxury. The venture is centred around padel, one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, with a luxury magazine and clothing range designed around the wider lifestyle and commercial ecosystem emerging around the sport.
For Davlynne, entrepreneurship provides the freedom to explore new ideas while applying the lessons accumulated throughout her career.
But the most significant turning point in her professional journey came from somewhere very different.
The Pivotal Turning Point: Learning to Start Again
Moving to the UK was a defining moment in Davlynne’s career not because it immediately opened new doors, but because many of the doors she expected to open remained firmly closed.
She arrived believing that her international experience and established career would naturally translate into opportunities. Instead, she found herself having to rebuild.
Davlynne sent more than 8,000 CVs and was repeatedly overlooked for positions she believed she was qualified to perform.
“It was incredibly humbling.”
The experience forced her to reconsider how she viewed her own career and professional identity. Rather than continuing to wait for someone else to recognise her capabilities, she decided to create her own opportunities.
She returned to learning, embraced AI and emerging technologies, rebuilt her professional network, and began developing her own businesses and consultancy practice.
That period fundamentally changed her relationship with work.
Today, she no longer defines herself primarily through the positions she has held. Instead, she defines herself through what she can create, the problems she can solve, and the results she can deliver.
The lesson was simple but profound: sometimes starting again does not mean starting from nothing.
Defining Achievement: From Forbes Africa to Building Her Own Future
Among the many milestones in her career, Davlynne continues to return to the launch of Forbes Africa as one of her defining achievements.
Working alongside Chris Bishop, she helped take the publication from a standing start to becoming the No. 1 B2B publication in Africa within twelve months.
The achievement represented far more than publication growth. It involved building credibility, developing an audience, establishing commercial viability, and creating a proposition in a market where there was no established blueprint to simply follow.
It also took place during an important personal chapter, as Davlynne was raising her daughter as a single mother while managing the demands of an exceptionally challenging professional role.
Since then, her career has increasingly moved toward entrepreneurship and brand development.
She has co-founded Beau Monde Traveller, developed international media and commercial ventures, built her consultancy practice, and is now developing PadelLux.
She is equally proud of becoming an author and publishing her own books, giving her the opportunity to document her experiences and career in her own words.
Yet her focus is not on recreating past achievements.
The challenge now is to take everything she has learned and apply it to new businesses, new markets, and new ideas.
What Keeps Her Moving: The Challenge of Solving Problems
After almost three decades, Davlynne remains driven by something remarkably consistent: solving commercial problems.
She is particularly drawn to businesses that have a strong product, service, or asset but have not yet fully articulated its value or translated it into a compelling market proposition.
Her approach begins with understanding why something is not working.
What is the business really offering? Who values it? Is the positioning clear? Does the customer understand the proposition? And, ultimately, is the marketing contributing to measurable business performance?
For Davlynne, marketing cannot exist in isolation.
She wants to understand whether strategy contributes to revenue, customer acquisition, partnerships, retention, or broader business value.
“I have never been particularly interested in marketing for marketing’s sake.”
That commercial mindset remains central to her work.
So does curiosity.
Having witnessed enormous changes across media and marketing throughout her career, Davlynne has deliberately immersed herself in AI and emerging technologies rather than treating them as separate from her work.
She sees AI as another tool for research, analysis, creativity, and decision-making but one that still requires human judgement.
After nearly three decades, the desire to learn has not diminished.
If anything, the pace of change has created more reasons to remain curious.
Redefining Success
Earlier in her career, success was largely measured through conventional business indicators: revenue, rankings, audience, growth, and professional recognition.
Those measures still matter to Davlynne. She remains commercially driven and believes businesses ultimately need results.
But moving to the UK changed her understanding of success.
She had already established an international career, yet entering a new country demonstrated how quickly professional history can become less relevant when circumstances change.
The experience taught her that professional identity can be far more fragile than it appears and that external recognition is not something anyone can depend upon indefinitely.
Today, success means having the confidence and capability to create opportunities independently.
It means walking into a business and knowing that her experience can make a meaningful difference, while remaining open to learning what she does not yet know.
It also means having the freedom to choose the work she takes on and continue building businesses of her own.
There is a deeply personal dimension to that definition as well.
Davlynne values the loving and supportive family that has been beside her through the more difficult chapters of her journey. Her understanding of achievement is therefore no longer limited to professional outcomes.
It is also about resilience, independence, adaptability, and the character developed along the way.
Beyond the Title: What a Fractional CMO Really Does
One of the misconceptions Davlynne encounters is that a Fractional CMO is simply a part-time version of a full-time Chief Marketing Officer.
In reality, she believes the role demands an unusually broad level of experience.
A Fractional CMO must be able to understand a business quickly, identify its genuine challenges, and make strategic decisions without necessarily having the infrastructure of a large marketing department behind them.
Davlynne’s role extends well beyond campaign management.
She examines the relationship between brand, customer, proposition, commercial strategy, partnerships, and revenue.
For her, marketing should be connected directly to business performance rather than functioning as an isolated department.
Her perspective on luxury follows the same principle.
Luxury, she argues, is not simply about expensive products, beautiful imagery, or high prices.
Genuine luxury is built through perceived value, positioning, experience, detail, scarcity, and trust.
If the underlying proposition is weak, no amount of marketing expenditure can make a business genuinely luxurious.
Her approach to AI is similarly practical.
Rather than using AI simply to produce content faster, she has integrated it into the way she researches, analyses, thinks, and works.
The opportunity, in her view, lies in combining technological capability with human judgement.
The Values Behind the Career
Behind Davlynne’s professional determination is a personal story that has shaped much of her character.
Being adopted had a significant influence on the way she approached life. She grew up with gratitude for the family who chose her, while also developing a strong determination to make something of herself and a deep sense of responsibility toward the opportunities she had been given.
That determination became one of the strongest drivers throughout her career.
She became a hard worker with a powerful instinct to deliver and prove herself. With experience and age, however, she has become increasingly aware of the difference between having a strong work ethic and feeling that one constantly has something to prove.
The work ethic remains.
The need to prove herself has evolved.
Motherhood brought another dimension to her understanding of responsibility. During the Forbes Africa years, she was balancing a demanding career with raising her daughter as a single mother.
Today, she is a mother to three daughters and part of a loving, supportive blended family.
Her partner has been beside her for nine years, including through her move to the UK and the process of rebuilding her professional life.
What she wants to pass on to her daughters is therefore not simply the visible side of achievement.
She wants them to understand that circumstances can change, rejection does not define their abilities, and rebuilding is always possible.
That lesson is perhaps the most personal expression of everything her career has taught her.
The Lesson She Would Pass Forward
Davlynne’s advice to those building their own careers is grounded in experience rather than theory.
She encourages people to focus on becoming genuinely good at what they do instead of becoming overly dependent on titles or recognition.
Build experience. Take responsibility for outcomes. Develop evidence that you can deliver.
Careers rarely follow a perfectly straight line.
Industries evolve. Technology transforms established ways of working. Circumstances can force people to reconsider paths they once believed were permanent.
The ability to learn, adapt, and start again can therefore be just as important as the expertise accumulated along the way.
Davlynne’s own journey from South African media to Forbes, international publishing, entrepreneurship, luxury hospitality, property, creative production, lifestyle ventures, and brand strategy demonstrates the value of remaining adaptable.
The common thread has never been a particular job title.
It has been the willingness to take responsibility, learn what is necessary, and keep moving when circumstances change.
Her most important lesson came when she had to rebuild her career in the UK.
She learned that while you cannot always control whether someone opens a door for you, you can control what you do next.
That is the lesson she hopes her daughters carry forward not that success is guaranteed, but that they should have the confidence to work hard, discover their strengths, and rebuild when life does not go according to plan.
Because if you can do that, you are never truly starting from nothing.
You are starting with everything you have learned.
